One of the best perks of owning a boat near our nation’s capital is getting a front-row seat to DC’s July 4 fireworks every year. This year is supposed to be the biggest fireworks show in history! The America 250 celebration promises an unforgettable show, and watching it from anchor on the Potomac River is a truly unique experience that landlubbers can only dream about.
As a boater, the challenge is that every year, authorities tend to hold river restrictions and closures close to the vest until the last minute, as boaters clamor desperately for information. This year, however, we were able to get details a bit earlier. This information is subject to change, but we have it from extremely credible sources and it represents the current plan for the America 250 fireworks show as it pertains to river traffic. So strap in, here we go:
Safety Zone 1
(Potomac River from the Key Bridge to 200 yards downriver of the 14th Street Bridge)
This Safety Zone will be enforced from 8:00 a.m. July 02, 2026 to 6:00 a.m. July 05, 2026. This area will be closed to all recreational vessels except those entering or exiting the Pentagon Lagoon. Recreational vessels entering or exiting the Pentagon Lagoon are directed to remain on the Virginia side of the river. Vessels will not be permitted to head north past the entrance to Pentagon Lagoon. Commercial ferry and dinner cruise vessels will be allowed through safety zone with permission of the Patrol Commander (so good luck…).
This Safety Zone 1 will be closed to all vessels, including commercial ferry and dinner cruise vessels, during airshow operations from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. July 03, 2026, and from 1200 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. July 04, 2026. During these times vessels may still enter and exit the Pentagon Lagoon, except during the fireworks show. So basically the Pentagon Lagoon is as far north as most will be able to go, even the day before. Looks like those plans for Three Sisters will probably have to wait.
Safety Zone 2
(Anacostia River from the 11th Street Bridge to 200 yards south of the Frederick Douglass Bridge)
This Safety Zone will be enforced from 6:00 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. July 04, 2026 and will be closed to all vessels. Like, period.
Safety Zone 3
(This is like a moving zone)
This area will be closed to all vessels within 100 yards of any barge carrying fireworks, while moving or at anchor. Nothing confusing about that, right? A number of fireworks barges will be stored at James Creek Marina until the morning of July 4, when they will be moved into position and anchored north of the 14th Street Bridge, so keep that in mind.
Anchoring For the Show
There will be a special anchorage zone from the 14th Street Bridge to Hains Point this year, but get there early if you want a prime viewing spot. Like last year, an extended no-wake zone will also be in effect from the 14th Street Bridge all the way down to the Woodrow Wilson Bridge starting around 6:00 PM, and you can bet there will be patrols in the area.
This is shaping up to be a historic night on the water. We know some of this information is a bit confusing, but here we are.
