The Potomac Riverkeeper Network‘s mission is to protect the public’s right to clean water in the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers and their tributaries. They stop pollution to enhance the safety of our drinking water, protect healthy river habitats, and enhance public use and enjoyment. This year, they celebrate World Rivers Day on Sunday, September 24 from noon to 2PM, with a boat parade starting in Old Town Alexandria and ending at the Transit Pier at The Wharf! All are welcome, but you need to register.

World Rivers Day is a annual celebration of the world’s waterways. It highlights the many values of our rivers, strives to increase public awareness, and encourages the improved stewardship of all rivers around the world. Rivers in virtually every country face an array of threats, and only through our active involvement can we ensure their health in the years ahead. Boaters and river enthusiasts from marinas and communities throughout Potomac watershed will come together to make a bold statement on behalf of the Nation’s river.
The idea is that you register your boat to join the parade, fundraise as a crew member or teammate on your favorite vessel, or donate directly to Potomac Riverkeeper Network as an independent fundraiser and join them for the after party. You can register here, as an individual or a team, and then get people to donate to your own fundraising page that they will provide for you. There are prizes for the top fundraisers!
On the day of the parade, show up at buoy #2 outside of Barca in Old Town Alexandria, and the parade will make it’s way to the Transit Pier at The Wharf, where there will be a private VIP party for participants starting at 2PM! Complimentary beer will be provided by Pacifico, and you can enjoy live music at the “Rolling on the River” concert (at Transit Pier stage). You can view their promo flyer here for more info!
